It’s been quite the junior year! This year marks my best and yet hardest year of my time here at Syracuse University. Through all the hard work and busy days I have been rewarded with the great honor of representing Syracuse University as a one of six engineers on a journey to Dubai to collaborate, learn, and experience a civil engineering internship. An opportunity of a lifetime!

Day 15 - Fujairah Day 2

Friday was another relaxing and sun filled day. We started off the day with a lovely buffet in the hotel. They had an omelet bar so I had to make use of it! Also the nan pancakes were different but a tasty substitution as the middle eastern version of a buttermilk pancake. Directly after breakfast it was right back to the beach until we all meet for lunch. I chose to go back to the buffet for another pleasant meal. It was all about the veggies and hummus! I think I had like three plates and each of them had some kind of different veggie and a side of hummus. For dessert I had to hit the home made waffle cones and ice cream bar. Vanilla with oreo and peanut M&ms all the way!

After my meal was digested it was back to the beach again. This time the waves were a lot bigger than previously. The larger waves were no problem for Mike and I, but Katelyn had some trouble. It was ok because her guardian angels (Mike and I) were close by. Haha
When 4pm rolled around it was time to head back to Dubai. Within a short amount of time everyone was sleeping. I spent most of the car ride observing the environment, writing my journal, and doing a wonderful crossword puzzle (Thank You Ellen!).

Back in Dubai all sun kissed and rejuvenated the group of interns went to the mall with the intention of seeing a movie, but they were all sold out. The mall was packed so half the group decided to go get groceries for the week and grab some dinner at TGIFridays (the nicest I have ever seen). I didn’t eat anything because I was still nice and full from my delicious lunch and ice cream.

The funniest thing happened on our walk back to the hotel. Before we exited the mall we noticed a 13 year old boy stuck in the seating area of a shopping cart! I took his parents and a security guard about 5 minuets to pry the boy out. Quite entertaining and provided a good laugh. I bet that the last time he wishes to get in the shopping cart.
Well it back to the grind tomorrow. Tomorrow it’s off to Abu Dhabi for a construction site visit.

Thanks for following and my apologies for the delayed posts and lack of pictures my computer is having some issues. Hope to get thing figured out soon. Best wished – Sean

  1. As you’re recreating on the beach in Fujairah, can you see India if you look into southeast and stand on your toes? If you’re standing on the Golden Gate Bridge (mid-span) looking west into the Pacific Ocean on a day with no fog (yeah right), the structure you see on the horizon is:
a.) The long lost city of Atlantis
    b.) Davey Jones Locker
    c.) Tokyo
    d.) An hallucination
e.) The conning tower on the Good Ship Lollipop

The more serious question (if you can call it that) for those engineers with inquiring minds that need to know (which I assume is all of you) is how far above the Golden Gate Bridge road bed (which is 245 feet above sea level) do you have to be in order to see Tokyo’s Sky Tree Communications Tower, (soon to be) Tokyo’s tallest structure at 2,080 feet (assume sea level). Assume all the yada, yada yadas necessary to make the problem work – i.e. no fog, no atmospheric distortion, that PV=nRT actually works, that absolute zero and non-frictional environments actually exist, that there is no unaccounted for mass in the universe, and that Planck, Avogadro, Newton and Faraday all calculated their constants accurately (haha). Let’s see which of your engineering teams can get to the answer quickest. No holds barred - anybody got a cocktail napkin?

Since Dubai knows how to do things in a big way (TGIFriday’s at the Dubai Mall – can you top that? – haha), I just assume the Most Interesting Man in the World (from the Dos Equis commercials) may actually spend weekends in Dubai when he’s not designing his own top secret keel for a yacht that he’ll be using as a walk-on for the 2013 America’s Cup Challenge in San Francisco. If you see him, perhaps pouring you and your buddies a round of Dos Equis, maybe you can confirm the following:
    • His To-Do list says, "Done."
    • He has proof that the Bermuda Triangle is actually a parallelogram.
    • He's the only one who knows what Willis is talking about.
    • If at first he does not succeed, then it is impossible.
    • His personality is so magnetic that it can bend light.
    • He once sent $2000 to a Nigerian on-line scammer and actually received his $2.7 million inheritance.

You see, it was Memorial Day weekend in San Francisco and other than that, not much else to report. The weather was not as hot as Fujairah, the Pacific Ocean is a little colder than the Gulf of Oman, gasoline is a bit more expensive here, and the SF Giants beat the St. Louis Cardinals on a grand slam by Andres Torres on Monday. Which reminds me, we gotta get a game on the calendar when you’re back in town. “Grab some pine, Meat!”

I am looking forward to our next conversation and your next blog posting.

    My love,

    Dad
