It’s been quite the junior year! This year marks my best and yet hardest year of my time here at Syracuse University. Through all the hard work and busy days I have been rewarded with the great honor of representing Syracuse University as a one of six engineers on a journey to Dubai to collaborate, learn, and experience a civil engineering internship. An opportunity of a lifetime!

Day 9 - Exam and Dubai Aquarium

Functioning on little sleep I woke up early to review for my exam and fit in some final prep for my presentation. Once 1pm rolled around I was done with a tough day! The presentation went well but the reviewing committee hammered us with questions. I was relieved once it was all over.
With the other half of the day I spent an hour or so by the pool relaxing and soaking up the sun. The fact that the UV index here is 10 every day slipped my mind, so I got a little pink with the little time I spent in the sun.
This mall is absolutely stunning! Every wing of the mall has a different design and interior finishes. The only down side is I got lost a few times due to the immense size.

For some evening fun we headed to the Dubai mall with the intention of getting some dinner and going to the DUBAI AQUARIUM. The evening was full of laughs and silliness. We had a great dinner prior to the aquarium at Ribs and Rumps. I had a small dinner at the apartments already so I had side or very garlicy, garlic bread. The others had burgers, of which they said fell within the top 5 burgers of their life. Our waiter was eccentric and supplied us with many jokes for the night. I was in a hyper mood doing James Bond impressions and acting out the escalator scene from the movie “Elf.”

The aquarium tunnel was really well done. I never want to be that close to sharks in open water... It was really neat to study them up close. From a design/construction frame of mind the aquarium is a engineering feat within its self.

Cute penguin!!! Give me a little penguin kiss.

The Duabi Aquarium and under water zoo was a blast! Thanks for following my adventure. Talk to you soon.

  1. The photos are so beautiful, Sean. It looks like you're actually IN the water with the sting ray! I really enjoy following along with your daily journal. I look forward to reading what new adventures you have each day. I can't believe all that you've done in little over a week. Amazing! It must feel much longer than a week's time, in a good way. Keep enjoying the opportunity of a lifetime.

    love,

  2. Hi Sean,

After your presentation and the grilling by the Review Board, seems like the aquarium trip was a great call. I guess the Dubai Mall has everything. What was the presentation about? I assume it didn’t have anything to do with aquatic life, the salinity of the Persian Gulf, krill or affectionate penguins.

I read the April 18, 2011 press release in the UAE Gazetteer that “the Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo marked a historic first with the birth of Humboldt Penguin chicks. The penguin chicks were born to three‐year‐olds Rami and Circo, marking the first‐ever births at Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo.
The hatching of the two chicks has set a historic first for Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo, as visitors throng to watch the newborns, which entertain the visitors with innocent frolics.”

Naturally, a couple of questions occurred to me. Did the Dubai team “throng” to the aquarium with the other visitors? Is it really possible to “throng” when it’s 120 degrees out? Would that be a Humboldt Penguin or Gentoo Penguin that you’re kissing? Haha. I can’t tell, but does the penguin kiss with his eyes closed too? I think Chris should post that picture on his blog to get back at you for the Sand Castle picture you posted of him on your blog. By the way, do the Humboldt penguin chicks have names? Naturally, I have a suggestion based on a poem I read as a kid – Abdul , the Bulbul Amir and Ivan Skavinsky Skavar. It would be interesting if your Lebanese friends know the poem, it’s an Arabic favorite though a little more violent than Jack and Jill.

Did you see the resident Piranhas at the aquarium? I understand from a friend that traveled to the Amazon that piranhas are good eating fish – only trouble is that you got to eat them before they eat you. It’s a dog-eat-dog world . . . or something like that. Were the piranhas in the same tank as the penguin chicks? Oh no!

Do you know that 108 foot long and 27 foot high panel of acrylic (yes, another Guinness World Record for Dubai) that holds back 10 million liters of water with only 750 mm of thickness between you and countless species of unfriendly predators, some with poisonous barbs, some with many rows of large sharp teeth, some with big appetites that you were standing next to? Well last year it sprung a little leak. Perhaps an engineering flaw? Did SpongeBob, Squidward, and Sheldon J. Plankton mention that in your tour? It makes me think of that scene from Mission Impossible I – “Kittredge, you’ve never seen me very upset. Red light! Green light! Hasta lasagna, don’t get any on ya.” Haha.

Must be cool to swim with the sharks. Were they in the same tank as the Humboldt chicks? Oh no!

I’m waiting for some pictures of the camel rides or was it camel races?

Hey, I found a video you might be interested in – the night sky in Dubai: http://www.adventure-journal.com/2010/02/beautiful-time-lapse-film-shows-the-awe-inspiring-night-sky/

Don’t forget your SPF 6000 when you relax next to the pool. I’m looking forward to your next post about Mr. Amir Kolahzadeh talking about Converged Technologies – truly fascinating topic. I’ll check YouTube for the lecture. Haha.

    With much love.

    Dad
